I took a Home Depot style 1/2″ Elbow and (2) 1/2″ pipes and threaded one with Teflon tape and the other with Paste.
After a set and cure I cut the assembly in half and finished the ends.
Below are my results.

Notice on the Paste you can hardly tell where the threads even are? This tells me the paste has worked its ways into every single nook and cranny to make for a fantastic seal!
But look back at the tape and you can see large gaps and the joint between the fittings is visible. You will have to take my word there is Teflon tape in there haha.
If I had access to a high power microscope I could do further analysis.. now who would have one of those…hmmm Dave? haha
